Mick Fanning Wins Hurley Lowers Pro September 20 2015
The last time Mick Fanning was in a WSL final, he had to throw a punch at a shark to get away after it swam up behind him at the J-Bay Open in South Africa.
Today was more like business as usual, as he took the win at the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles on the 8th stop on the WSL world tour.
Fanning took out Brazilian Adriano de Souza, who has lived in Laguna Niguel in recent years. Before the final Adriano was leading the WSL world tour point standings, but after the victory its Mick Fanning who is now world number one.
“I think it’s been a pretty wild year,” Fanning said. “J-Bay is one of those things no one really wants to talk about. For me, this wave and this event are all about performance. To walk away with this trophy is really special.”
Fanning scored waves of 9.77 and 7.67 in the final, and even though de Souza had a 9.0 on his score line, he couldn’t find a second score to take the lead in the final.
“Adriano is such a great competitor and great guy,” Fanning said. “We both threw it out, it was great fun. He never gives up. I respect him a lot.”
The WSL is now headed to France and Portugal , before wrapping up the year in Hawaii.
